The History of the Universe in 200 Words or Less

By Eric Schulman

The History of the Universe in 200 Words or Less appeared in the January/February 1997 issue of the Annals of Improbable Research. Since then, it has been translated into more than thirty languages, and researchers all over the world are working on further translations. Several papers, presentations, books and plays have featured and/or been directly or indirectly based on the history, including A Briefer History of Time. The history has received some media attention, and has been used in several college and secondary school classes. In an attempt to conserve precious bandwidth, mirror sites for the history have been established around the globe. Many readers have felt compelled to comment on the piece.
